Goldfish tea is all the rage in Taiwan at present, and at $30 for a box of 12 teabags they are not for the faint hearted. That’s about €2.20 per tea bag!

The good news is that no goldfish are harmed in the making of these teabags, so what exactly are they?

They are the brainchild of Charm Villa, a creative agency based in Taipei. Launched 2 years ago as a limited production item, they have become extremely popular and often sell out, so supply has been an ongoing issue.

The teabags are fashioned by hand from Japanese fabric to look like a goldfish, and filled with Taiwanese tea leaves. The bag swells up when it hits the water, and a thread is attached to the ‘mouth’ so that when pulled, it looks like the ‘fish’ is swimming.

In Asian culture the goldfish represents wealth and good fortune. The tea comes in four exotic flavours, and are all grown and hand-picked in Taiwan.

If you really must have them, they can sometimes be found on Amazon.com from third party sellers for about $80 a box!
