As hunger continues to be a serious global challenge, food is the most wasted resource. Roughly one third of all food produced for human consumption each year ends up in the bin, making food waste a massive 1.3 billion ton of a problem.

It is naturally difficult for any outlet to predict what will sell on any given day and what won’t. Will more egg sambos sell versus chicken fillet rolls today?

waste2A start up called Winnow is focusing on cutting back on the amount of food that gets thrown away by offering retailers and chefs insight into how they waste various ingredients. The app works to identify the types of food that is being thrown away, and with combined data from an electronic scale, the smart meter can tell the value of what is being binned.

The London based app is in the process of expanding, will we be seeing food service outlets in Ireland using this app next?
